Each league is different, there is a default version and a version that can be changed. You are in a league where it can be changed by the league administrator. I intended to not allow a 2 level move but there is an easy workaround to that which the matrix does not prevent.
I should probably just change the matrix to allow such a move since it doesn't actually prevent it as is. I don't like things too restrictive like not allowing any position changes.
I'd not be surprised if things change down the line.
Allowing a CB to switch to DE, say 240lbs, 36lbs under weight makes a joke of things, only alleviates the underlying problem slightly.
EDIT: To expand....
CB player frame irl are different from that of a DE. You'd never see a CB bulked up through training camp to switch to DE, it's simply unrealistic.
The matrix is set up to prevent that - though since customisable... kinda pointless. The trick referred to is also something I'd like to be addressed.
I've called for weight to play a greater part - want to switch CB to DE? Great. Unless his weight gets within a small % of the weight for a DE, he can't be put in depth chart or overrides.
...minimum player weight to play a position, e.g., 260# to qualify to play LDE or RDE, would be the next logical game improvement beyond the position change matrix. If enacted, it should be completely customizable by leagues so that those leagues that currently allow any player at any weight to play any position can continue on that track if they choose to do so while other leagues that prefer player weights more like actual professional football can create the player minimum weights that suit them. And, of course, the "overrides" would need to be programmed to enforce the league player weight settings.
I dunno, i lost 85 pounds in 14 months after some basic diet and exercise changes (3 meals, portion control, actually exercising :) ). 2-fiddy to 165. Currently holding at 178 ish for the last 4 years.
It's doable, weight wise. Easily, in my direct experience.
Matrix wise, im ok with admins controlling (but would really like to see more admins posting how they control player matrixes within their leagues) positional "opportunities of change."
I'm not ok with the new global game limitation of player positions.
The bottom line is all this matrix stuff is just going to become obsolete once the legitimate and actual game engine issues are addressed. As the game engine is repaired, the matrix will become the problem. In regards to a global player matrix, MFN robbed Peter to pay Paul, IMHO.
The current global implementation of the new player matrix is a waste of time over time, and will eventually impede any future improvements to the actual game engine.

Congrats on the weight loss.
The issue in game though is that the perception and reality are that a lot of the position changes make little sense from a real world view, and are purely to exploit the game engine.
A 5ft10 CB lining up at DE would almost certainly get smashed at the LoS. Pile on the weight, would lose their speed advantages.
You're right in that game engine improvements should get rid of a lot of the need for the position matrix, but we're where we are. In a loose league, you lose any semblance of realism by having ridiculous rosters.Let's be honest, forget you're an experienced owner, you come to this name as a newbie, see a roster with no RB or TE but 12 WR, 10 C, no LB, SS,FS, 1 D Lineman and 18 CB... you'd think the game was bad.
Position changes should be rare, and I'm as guilty as anyone on that. I'm always looking at draft picks, FA to see if a player may be better suited changing - but I'm assessing that in the context of considering weight movement, if it's unreasonable then no.
I think there area number of areas that can be improved (and are).
1. Draft player generation - larger numeric pool of viable players, less need to change position. 2. Adding weight constraints to positions - alleviates the speed exploit. If a DE has to be say 260lbs minimum, then that's 16 lbs below the 276figure, so what, 2 speed? Benefit is negligible, so speed exploit is nerfed. 3. Keep position matrix to allow changes / depth chart/override placement. Just make the matrix easier to use ;)
I inherited NFL league with Seth going on extended break. He's set the matrix up reasonably, I just tinkered with one or two minor changes (let anyone be a KH - can't run fakes so no advantage or exploit can occur). As league admin, it's your responsibility to explain and publicise and such changes.
As for the point the matrix will impede game engine developments, I disagree.
I think in general, it's a positive for forcing people to have to adopt realistic rosters. There still remain potential exploits of it which I'd like to see tightened up, not going to say them as Smirt may be reading this.
My biggest criticism is that it's bound to both placement in depth chart/overrides AND player position changes. I'd like to see that decoupled so that player position changes are dependent upon body frame, weight, with min weight also added to placement checks.
Preventing unrealistic player positions means a lot of game engine development can then go ahead knowing there shouldn't be CBs as DEs for example.
