Wildcard tiebreakers
by mwd65 @ 4/25/2017 5:34 pm
I know this has been mentioned before, but with wildcard tiebreakers, isn't it the same procedure as NFL?
1. Head-to-head.
2. If no head-to-head, then best conference record (if not in the same division).

In MFN-67, there is a tie at 10-6 between Cincinnati and Jacksonville. There was no head-to-head during regular season. Jacksonville was 9-3 in conference games. Cincinnati was 7-5, yet Cincinnati was chosen as the wild card. Wondering why?

It's a great question.. seems like even the NFL's 3RD Tiebreaker which best winning % between common opponents wasn't used either which would give Jacksonville 4 wins and Cincinnati 3wins. and not even their 4th TB was used which is SOV (strength of victory) Jax beat a 14-2 atlanta team and a 10-5 Buffalo team best team CIN beat was 9-7 GB..the next TB doesn't fit either.. SOS strength of schedule.. you had powerhouses ATL..MIA..BUF..more winning teams than Cin..

i dont have the patience to go thru the rest of the tie breakers..but would also like to know the exact process myself

PS I'm Tampa in 67

You are right, Dash. I went through the same process as you listed and I must be missing something, because all the tiebreaks seem to favor Jacksonville.

Anyone else have an idea?

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
Two Clubs

1.Head-to-head, if applicable.
2.Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
3.Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
4.Strength of victory.
5.Strength of schedule.
6.Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
7.Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
8.Best net points in conference games.
9.Best net points in all games.
10.Best net touchdowns in all games.
11.Coin toss.

That is the site I used. Since there was no head-to-head, you go to step 2. Jacksonville was 9-3 in conference and Cincinnati was 7-5, so I believe Jacksonville would get the spot. That didn't happen, so there must be something else.

I think it happens on occasion, but I'm thinking Jacksonville should be in. Pretty clear head to head then division conference record. Did anyone PM JDB? He will change it if that's the case. I was surprised I got in actually.

I did some tweaks to the tiebreakers in 0.4.1. There was a rare situation where it did it in the wrong order, it was brought up about a month or two ago, which is probably what happened here. Oddly enough, this bug was there from day 1, but this is just the second time it's been reported. I didn't hotfix 0.4 because of the potential if it causing other problems.
