I thought a sack counted as a type of hurry. Are they explicitly different? One player I have got a sack but no hurries last season - seemed different to what I'd expected.

No. You can't get both. You either hurry the QB (making him throw it earlier than he'd like or run it), or you sack him (or neither of course).
