So I'm still fairly new to this game. I've had some success building my team up and recently regretted a signing I made for a player this off-season, so I decided to trade him. My question is when trading a player away how much of the salary do you have to pay? I went from being in good shape to hurting next year for cap space. How many seasons am I going to be paying for him?

You have to pay for the entire bonus remaining on the contract. For the current season only the bonus money for the current season goes against your dead cap. For all seasons remaining on the contract after the entire remaining bonus is accelerated onto your dead cap for next season. So at most 2 seasons.
