I think there should be some kind of slider or something where you could set when to catch a punt or let it go.
This one should probably not have been caught. http://cust12.myfootballnow.com/watch/26#5971

I believe that the decision to catch it or let it go is based on the player's intelligence, but I may be incorrect in that.

Yea, that happened to me also, but only once. And it was ONLY once! Plus I still won the game.
It's not like it NEVER happens! I wonder if you would have worried about it so much, if it happened in your favor? Gotta admit, there's some weird stuff that happens in football all the time, most of it, just not very often. That's what makes THIS game so good, the unpredictable can happen! And does happen! Just my 2 cents........

I wouldn't say I was worried about it. It wasn't even a regular season game, and had no impact on the outcome.
True, this could happen in real life...and the player would get chewed out when they reached the sideline. I was simply saying it would be nice if there were an option to create a rule or something that said "Don't catch punt inside X yard line". |

No, I agree with you!
Maybe put it in the 'Misc. Rules?' |

I don't see why it would be helpful to have it as a rule. No coach in the NFL is telling their players to return punts from the one yard line, it's just that in the heat of the moment, some players make poor decisions.

If I gave you access to set it as a rule, I would also give the player the probability to decide to not follow the rule, and then it would look like the rule isn't working. The probability that he'll let the punt go increases as it approaches the goal line, and the player's intelligence impacts the probability as well. In this case, the player was pretty intelligent and the catch was made so close to the goal line that the probability had to be almost zero (nothing is ever zero) - so that was just an unbelievably rare dice roll. |

Maybe "Rule" was a bad choice, how about "OPTION?"

I'm sure a special teams coach would tell his returners, "Hey, if it looks like you can't break out, don't bother"... And it would be up to the player at that point.
Also, the Intelligence of another nearby Special Teams guy could influence... Saying to the returner, "Don't bring it out" or "I see a lane, go!", especially if he's a veteran or more experienced player. |
