Onside kick

Excuse my ignorance on this rule, but I thought if the kicking team kicked the ball out of bounds it is a penalty and the receiving team gets the ball.

Below is a link to the play. The next kick is recovered by the kicking team and they proceed to score the game winning TD.

Anyone know the rule on this?

From the NFL Rule Book

The receiving team must line up a minimum of 10 yards from where the ball is kicked. Members of the kicking team can recover the ball after the kick travels 10 yards or the ball touches an opponent. If the kicked ball goes out of bounds before traveling 10 yards, the kicking team is penalized 5 yards and must rekick.

Thanks, Booger! I didn't notice the ball had not went 10yds (was a little emotional at the time). This makes sense now.
