1. You don't have to wait until a player is in the final year in order to sign them to a new deal, as long as it isn't the first year.
2. You don't have to wait until a certain point of the season to sign players to a new deal. If you have a bunch of players in their last year, you can sign some one week, more the next week, etc. It doesn't have to be a huge task that has to get done all at one time.
It seems that the more time you have the more advantage you have in the game, which was not what attracted me here in the first place. Never mind eh

I spent the best of an hour and a half last night renegotiating contracts on my team, all accepted, but I'm still just over the cap with half a team. I'll work on the rest later today, but it really is painstaking to do, hopefully some will take a big pay cut , strippers and beer will have to sweeten the deal ;)

Yow, here's what I would do: first, set the filter to "contracts" on your roster. Then, sort by "save if release". See if any of the high numbers there will renegotiate to clean up cap room. Otherwise, you may have to make some tough cuts.
If this is preseason and you have more than 53 players, you may have to cut down closer to the 53 man regular season limit to get under the cap in time for training camp.

Yep, I've done all that. I did the entire team but in 2 halves, so today on rollover will be the Ds turn. The problem was that after the 46 round draft I would say around 4/5 s of the team were on the same length contract, 2 season deals? Naively I didn't reneg their contracts which is why I'm in the mess I am now. I really don't think I have the stomach to do the whole team rebuild thing again, so if this doesn't work out I'll just let it go cpu, sadly.

I think this should be 'do-able', how about when a player is eligible for a new contract, either their name changes color or something else that would alert the owner. Do-able?
