If you’ll notice after playback, the halfback runs up the middle about 7 yards and makes a catch, the playcall, is shotgun normal hb flare, and if you’ll notice on this particular play, when you retrieve it, The halfback’s assignment, is to drag right, not up the middle! During this game there was a recurrent instance or two, not sure if it’s a glitch or what

My only guess is that it's a hot read for the back before he gets into his route. As that route travels forward for a second then out to the flats. The read is made too soon when he moving forward. So the pass is targeted forward aND back continues after that ball placement . I wonder if the other plays have hot reads as well?
If 6 people are blocking for a pass play (5 oline and FB) and the defense blitzes 7, a RB or WR will run a hot route.
This isn't completely accurate. Hot reads happen when the QB correctly diagnoses that the defense is running a blitz pre-snap and directs the RB (it can rarely be the TE or WR) to run a hot route and immediately throws it there. Hot reads usually happen to counter act blitz overuse, and were introduced to counter the blitz 2 defenses of old.
