I've been seeing this for a couple years now, and have mentioned it numerous times.


There's 2 fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.
The bug would be +1 fumble recovery (vs. total fumbles recorded) shown in stats.

Not sure if there is a fumble not being recorded, or an extra recovery given.

Recovery of an onside kick is not a "fumble" recovery. It's merely a change of possession like a normal kickoff. If it's classed as a fumble recovery, then it is a bug.

Which is the answer - should be classified as a kick return. We know the play is correct, issue in way stats calculated only.

I'm not sure I follow you here Martin. A kickoff, onsides or not, cannot be a fumble unless the ball changes possession from the kicking team to the receiving team.

The point I though I was clear on is that the game is treating an onside kick recovery as a fumble recovery, hence the "additional" fumble recovery stat WH found - which was for the onside kick retrieval.

Never said it's a fumble... but that the engine treats it as one, meaning the reported stats are wrong.

Chouinard recovered an onside kick late in the game - so the game has never handled those correctly, maybe it's viewing the onside kick as automatic change of possession so assuming for kicking team to have the ball, a fumble must have occurred.

Regardless of the validity of that assumption, JDB has confirmed the onside kick recovery is being counted as a fumble recovery. I'd presume the fix is to instead treat it as a kick return.

I did not look into my stats, but I'm pretty sure a kickoff or onside kick does not count as a fumble recovery in the stats if the ball has not changed possession.

Indianapolis kicked, Chicago recovered, returned for a yard.

Raised the issue, JDB confirmed that in this case, the onside kick recovery was treated as a fumble recovery.

Also found a minor text issue in the process, so two birds, one forward pass with a stone.
