Cra...it is still a free kick by rule, granted, they have/had options for kick or punt not to be confused with a scrimmage kick, think KO from the hand) and in some cases drop kick, in the past. The play following a safety is a that of a Free Kick situation. Trust me.

This is probably what I should have said:
You can't call for a fair catch & then allow the ball to hit the ground on a free kick. Once the ball travels 10 yards, it is a "live" ball and can be recovered by either team.
If you call for a fair catch on a free kick, you better **** well catch the ball. ;)

I'm not sure if you can call a fair catch if the kicker forces the ball into the ground to make it pop up into the air.

Sir, this is why 99.99999% of kicks on onside kicks hit the ground first and pop-up...it rules out a FC possibility....I mentioned this earlier also.

It's a widely known and an accepted fact...(and I know we are getting well off the beaten track here)..that Trump is, well, not very happy in his own nappy ! Granted, I think USA took the lesser of two evils on this....but he has not exactly endeared himself to the World like Kennedy had.....in so far as upsetting A LOT of the World, whilst treating the Office as a Business suit.

Let's see how he shapes out, personally, I can't see him becoming a popular President...as he likes to proclaim.

In the weird NFL parlance, a punt is called a "scrimmage kick." Anything that starts with a snap is either a punt or a field goal. My original concern was that onside kicks were not required to travel 10 yards downfield. There is no flag in this situation; the receiving team just gets the ball. Also, sometimes an onside kick goes straight out of bounds. There is apparently no penalty for this, simply a rekick. The rules changed recently so you don't get the crazy formations you used to get. The onside kick formation follows the new rules, so maybe we knew about them when the game was designed, but it seems odd to me that the rules regarding legal and illegal onside kicks are apparently being ignored.

Officiated 40 years Internationally and on some occasions, USA (FED & NCAA).....

Take me back to a time where a "punt" is not a scrimmage kick ?
