Include Rule Usage in Game Log
by slowtospeak @ 5/01/2026 12:28 am
Currently, users are being forced to jump through paranoid hoops in order to find out which of our gameplan rules, if any, are actually being used. It would be much easier on us, and you, if you would play with an open hand. Please let us see, along with the play call, the rule, or non-rule, that led to it. Do I need to adjust the rule that got me burned, or did I just get outsmarted? It sure would be nice to know!

I've been requesting this for ages - and - it is currently being worked on.

No offense, but if you've been requesting this for ages, then I'll believe it when I see it. JDB just needs to know that lots of people want this thing. I know from sour experience that one weirdo's request tends to get ignored. It shouldn't be hard to do, and it crosses the line from "QOL" into "functional equivalence."

Always love the shouldn't be hard to do claims.

It's definitely been spitballed.

My view is it needs careful testing before release, if it comes in, because imo you should only be able to view activation of your own rules, not opponents.

It's also only really useful for the last game you played. For example, week 1, rule wibble1 gets invoked. Midweek, change rule, week2 wibble1 gets invoked - which has diff triggers, output to rule invoked in week 1.

So maybe putting the name of rule is simple, but lacking context... Only way to get round the issue above would be to version history rules, which is a decent tranche of work in it's own right.

What if you change a rule name between games? Only safe route for player is every time you want to make a change, effectively duplicate rule, change, deactivate old, activate nrlew so you are able to see the old file from historic games.

Theres a lot to be considered, but its safe to say there's no objection in principle

Only view your own rules. Intellectual property. Opponents should not be given short cuts to concepts and ideas.

You'll only be able to see your own rules - not anyone else's.

It would have to be in title only. I have a universal offense rule, which covers my plays - located at/near the bottom of my rules. Imagine my game logs if it lists the details every single play.

Problem is, Smirt, as I said, it the title is listed in the game log, then the log file has to include the rule details on another sheet.

Without that, you've no context, as I said, 2 different games, same rule name but you've changed rule details.

That's why what looks simple often has implementation issues attached that people don;t think of.

I don't have a problem with only seeing my own rules. The burning question is: Is my stuff really working? Or is it being ignored for some reason? There has to be a really good (or really bad) reason this is the way it is. But, I suspect that the really good reason, is not very good for the rest of us.

It's valid to want to see your rules firing. A lot of the time I'm finding things not working as expected are either a mess up on a trigger condition, ordering of rules etc. Would be interesting to find out if HC abilities "interfere" at times.

The problem is, you need a number of games worth of data to be able to fully evaluate and as I said, if you make changes between games, seeing the rule name is meaningless as here's no context what the rule was at the time the game was played.

Until a solution is fleshed out to that - possibly version history on rules with each edit/save, game play generation being updated to add rule / version, having a way to access rule versions / including in log file - it's useful but only on a very basic imo and of course, can't be implemented retrospectively
