seriously, tell me how much you like glenn hugh's new album(s)? the new status Quo disc? The last 2 Who albums? Even Shania dropped an album a couple years ago.
I know i'm being super-gruff, but like every single band named has dropped new music in the last 5 years. Including Eddie and Alex. Love all that old stuff one wants to, but i suggest one listen to al the new stuff. I should bring it up a notch of agreement - current R&B/SOul is just humping music with Jack Horner porno beats and an auto tuned image. I really miss bands like the tops, temptations, all the motown and late 60 through the mid 80's r&B. I always say - and lead me not into the 4 tops, but to the Temptations, so Help me gawd. One of them taught me that I can't help myself, but the other brought me Cloud 9. Ain't no point in shedding the tears of the clown, especially when Smokey sings (that's like 4 song references I hope folks stuck in the 20 th century should find some inspirations from). Totally down when it comes to the old town artists but by golly all except the dead ones have new material in the last few years. Even some of those dead folks got new releases. I encourage people who enjoy all the bands of yesterday to listen to what those bands are doing today. Billy said it in 1979 - get into a new pair of sneakers, get yourself a new pair of speakers. What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing? Can't you tell that your tie's too wide? Maybe I should buy some old tab collars? Welcome back to the age of jive Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey? You can't dress trashy 'til you spend a lot of money Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound funny But it's still rock and roll to me 5 song references. 5. Ah. Ah. Ah.

WitchHunter, I have to admit that I am basically stuck in the past. But who can really blame me? All the best music, ever written so far, has come from the 50's through 1985 (and that's pushing it). Now, you will say, that I don't listen to the music of today. I do. However, scrolling through my saved songs, and albums, I was hard pressed to find much of the newer stuff.
Here's what I found: Gretta Van Fleet-album, Arctic Monkeys-album, Me 1st and the gimmee gimmee's-albums, songs by Kid Rock, Smash Mouth, Stone Temple Pilots, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead. I'm sure if I heard newer songs, on the radio, I would know the song but not the artist of today's music. Up until 10 years ago, I would've agreed totally with your statement that I was totally stuck. Lately, though, I've been making a concerted effort to (force myself) listen to newer music. I've asked my youngest daughter, who used to work at the Rock Hall of Fame, what her and her friends listen to as well my friends. I've written the names down, as well as yours, and will listen to those that I haven't listened to yet. I do have to admit, the music today is getting much better than it was in the 90's and earlier 2000's. Why? Because I think the newer bands realized how great the music of the past really was and, in some ways, trying bring that sound back. For me, and those raised in the "boomer years", appreciate the effort the newer artists are trying to make music better again. PM me some music I should listen to so that I can expand music horizons. I'm always open to new suggestions. Thanks for the feedback!! Great post!! |

Glass Houses reference! Love it!! Great post!!!
Well, you'll be happy to know, I've finally progressed, and now appreciate, the music from the "hair bands" in the 80's. LOL. I get there music, their passion, and their drive, finally I will probably never understand the music of the 90's or 2000's. Miley Cyrus, Brittney Spears, Beyonce, etc, are throwbacks to the old days of burlesque and the hootchie kootchie girls. LOL. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful women. These ladies have incredible voices but there talent is being foreshadowed by their skimpy outfits, risqué dance moves, and the excessive amounts of dancers doing whatever to make a huge floor show for nothing. Their music should be the central piece everyone should be drawn into. The voices, the pitches, the incredible words in the songs that they have penned. Their music, and talent, is being lost in translation. Sad, actually. Again, great post!! Thanks for sharing!!! |

I love metal, especially thrash and I love a lot of the old bands. Most of those same bands are still putting out new music, love what I've heard from the last ever Megadeth album. Metal Church is not thrash but they have new music out too. Death Angel and Testament have new stuff as well.
Part of the problem is there aren't many places to hear new music without searching for it. I can't even listen to over the air radio, satellite radio was the final nail in the coffin for me and OTA radio. Maybe it's just the Dayton/Cincy market but all of our stations play the same old **** they have always played. My musical tastes have changed over the years as I can no longer listen to Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, and the like. The best thing about music is there's something for everyone. Not everyone likes the music I like and that's OK. No reason to be a music snob. |

Searching YouTube awhile back I came across a young, female Japanese band that did a couple of cover versions of classic metal that came out before they were born.
Hagane covers Rainbow in the first vid and Judas Priest in the second https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuZX-guUgzE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fr9N0ld2Y8 |

Dave Mustaine going out in style and of all the rockers who say it's a farewell tour, Dave is the one I'd pick to actually stick to his word unlike Kiss and Motley Crue, etc.

Metal is my favourite as well. Mostly European bands, but going also international. At the moment I'm tending to Folk Metal.

How about 3 versions of the same song, Got the Time by Joe Jackson, Anthrax, and Korpliklaani (titled Ennen, in their native language).
Joe Jackson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxrRMi3GHVE Anthrax https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be7iNHw8QoQ Korpliklaani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWzaUkMvfZE When I first heard Korpliklaani's version, I didn't know it was a remake, thought it was original until I listened and it sounded familiar. Being in a different language it took me a few minutes to realize why. |
